Would They Ever Produce Real Muscle Cars Again?
If you are someone in your forties or fifties, and you have fond memories of your first car, more than likely you owned an All-American muscle car. There is a growing trend of people throughout the United States looking to buy classic muscle cars to restore. The main reason for this is happening because nobody makes cars like this anymore. The main question is who’ll start manufacturing them again?
Chevy and Ford happen to be bringing out new versions of Camaro’s and Mustangs ever since the 60′s. The problem is that every year these people get away from what a true muscle car is and they keep filling them with more and more computer equipment. Will there ever be the next car which has a 327 and a 4 barrel carburetor? The regrettable truth is we almost certainly won’t have one ever again.
The main problem is people like to repair things when they are not necessarily faulty in the first place. One perfect case in point is the 1967 Camaro, which was one of the greatest muscle cars ever. In spite of its reputation, Chevy chose to stop making this particular version. The same goes for the 1966 Mustang, which is another classic that Ford just decided wasn’t worth making.
So now here comes the humorous thing. Volkswagen saw the chance to remake the VW Bug and they did. This new Beetle sold well in spite of its ultra modern design. If they’d only stuck to the original style, they might have sold more. It’s hard to do well if you always believe that doing things a new way is always better.
Probably the most crucial thing might be this. What might you do if Chevy revealed that they were making a new Camaro with a 327 engine and a 4 barrel carburetor with no modern technology? I’ve asked hundreds of people throughout the years and the response was the same: they would definitely purchase one. Therefore what could be the problem? When there is a demand for something which is back-to-basics, can’t the car companies listen?
When will Ford or GM determine that it is a good chance to build cars like the good old days? I imagine that they will become hot specialties. Until Ford and GM recognize this, we will have people searching around junk yards and the Internet for classic muscle cars to rebuild.
Perhaps one day a muscle car junkie will be the CEO of Ford or GM and decide to start making muscle cars again. At this time, these CEO’s think engineering makes better cars. For me personally I think it’s time to go back to the basics.
