The many risks of drink driving

There will come a time in most people’s lives when they will have to make what is a fairly simple decision. The choices are to either go out and drive and not drink alcohol or instead to leave the car at home and have a few drinks. At this point the decision is pretty straightforward and most people have no problem choosing but it becomes much more difficult when the person is already out and has already had a few drinks. Most people will know not to drive but some people in a lesser state of mind due to alcohol might take the risk of driving home.

It is possible for someone to have an alcoholic drink and still be legally allowed to drive home. Any level of alcohol will have a negative effect on a person though and so people should really try to avoid drinking and driving altogether. The dangers of driving under the influence are many and when a taxi only costs a few pounds there is no reason for a person to risk the safety and livelihood of others but also themselves.

The chance of a person having an accident rises drastically when they drink and continues to do so the more alcohol they consume. The average person is around seven times more likely to have an accident if their blood alcohol level is 0.10 and at 0.15 this figure rises to a dangerously high 25 times more likely.

When a person is under the influence it takes them far longer to react than it would normally. This means that presented with a car suddenly stopping or a child running into the road the person would have little chance of stopping in time if they have been drinking. A person also loses a lot of their ability to make good decisions and so drunk drivers will often pull out into gaps they shouldn’t or drive faster than is safe.

The dangers from drink driving don’t just come from potential accidents either. It is dangerous for people because it could cost them everything including their license, their job and possibly even their family if it stops them from getting a job in the future.
